We have found it very hit and miss in England even with a booster onboard, to be fair though we are not townies so perhaps asking too much to find a Fon spot in many rural areas

We have Bt landline and broadband  and have fon. We or rather I bought Motorhomewifi Iboost system (Mel Gerald had a fit at the price) but it worked fantastic we could get a signal on caravan club site with fon while our friend who also has fon couldn't.

I agree with you Lesley....everywhere we have been in the Uk we could pick up a BT-openzone signal... or a BT-wfi signal..or a Bt-fon signal..normally 4 to 5 green bands on the wifi.. Fon 424776184  I think Alan's booster is either  Fon 4287546312  not working  correctly ...or is not powerful enough...........mine is a directional booster Fon 1226285628 Lesley I told you not to tell Gerald the price Fon 2329102225 look what happened when bought Gerald that cree torch...boooohoooo from Aldi/Lidl £13.00 Fon 4287546312 ...complained at first ....then he was over the moooon when he saw the light Fon 424776184  Fon 1226285628

Hi Andy....yes I have the fonera simple box as well ....but not tried the Fon hotspots in France as yet.... I have been using my mifi sfr sim...there seems to be less fon hotspots up in the northern region....but I am hoping to connect to a few when we are mid to south of France   where the fon spots seem more concentrated...we could get onto a lot in the Uk in fact nearly everywhere also we could connect in Portugal if wanted
Thanks for the photo's

 Yes ....&...Yes
It is like a small router that you have at home....and it plugs into your router with a ethernet cable that comes with it (it could be wifi-ed to router) but hard wired cables are always the best....and it stays at home, on all the time connected to your router...FON have two boxes one the simple...and one a litle bit better for more cost...but the simple is fine around £35.00 one off payment....and that splits your broadband to give a little to other people on the network giving you the largest share, then you have a code code to access others fon users..BUT THEY CAN NOT GET INTO YOUR SYSTEM... that allows you to connect to all the other uses in different countries...so when you are near one of the hotspots in the UK,Germany, france, belgium,Spain,Portugal and many  more you get free internet....like the uk BT are a member so all there open zone...fon spots..btwifi you connect free of charge.....but you need a wifi booster to get the signal..otherwise you need to be on the persons drive to connect to there signal

Polly read on this link  http://corp.fon.com/

also at the top of the page you see a linkl to all Fon hotspots.
If you are BT in the Uk ofr SFR in france or some other telephone broadband networks you are automatic a member ....if not do like me and others buy a simple one off payment for the box and connect ..then use your code to access others when close

Think of it as spliitting your internet in two Polly, only you have access to your locked side, and the other side is for other fon users to connect too, they can't connect to yours.
Same thing when you connect to others, you can't connect to other peoples locked side

Polly when you get your fon box you will get instructions, a simple box a connection lead a mains plug and lead and a password.....that is yours so keep it safe..when you search for other networks....(with your booster connected..make sure you are on the booster wifi as you will have two one will be your original laptop wifi.)  then if you see a btopenzone or bt free internet or Bt wifi...or bt fon. or fon...or in the other countries like zon and sfr hotspot..you connect to it then it will ask you for your password before it will allow you to be connected to the internet..enter your FON PASSWORD...then you are away up and running for free...
But what ANDY and KEN ksh have said i totally agree with.

Mel

Polly most of your ccc sites are on btopenzone so that is free connection..Polly don't tell anybody could you keep that a secret ...mel

Would I get a connection say 1/4 mile away as the crow flies with my booster

Polly.... it's like how long is a piece of string!!!!!....it depends on line of site...meaning if yours is a directional booster...you would have to point it the direction of free hot spot you are wanting...so keep moving the booster around on your roof through a roof light (one you can reach from)untill you get the best signal....it's better out side than in your van you will get a better signal.... if you have bi-directional that should pick up in two directions..if you have the Omni directional
(that is like a white tube) that will pick up in all directions without moving the booster Now it also depends on which booster you have....a cheaper one....that you plug into your usb...your range may be limited.....or a more expensive one that goes outside...(price does not always mean it's better .....but most of the time it is) or.. I find many other motorhomers use the ones from this company, they are very good and the owners have tried and tested many of the products being motorhomers themselves, also if you have any problems just email them they are very good.

motorhomewifi.com  High Gain USB WiFi Antennas
Distances was one of the questions you asked..(how long is a piece of string)..well depending there is nothing between you and the hotspot..and what quality your booster is.....some booster's could reach up 5km to 7km....( 3 to 4miles) but most of the time you may be only talking 1/2 mile to 1.5 miles to get a good signal.

And when you away from home you only need your Fon code........ NOT the FON box that's stays at home switched on for other fon uses to connect to yours if they are close enough ....good luck...don't forget BT openzone and bt wifi you can connect as well just use your Fon code Fon 424776184

You will be lucky to get anything at Marbury, I didn't manage it last year, surrounded by too many trees

Well i am still getting SFR/FON all the way down France...up to press at all the AIRES we have stayed on we have managed Fon internet (not for downloading) but for emails and most of what we require ...some better signals than others depending how close we are to where ever the signal is coming from...we are now parked at a friends...mid France..middle of the sticks.. no internet or phone into the house ...not expecting any wifi at all....but Hey straight into a fon...the wifi unit and Fon is working a treat.....My last top up of my sim ran out about a month ago...But I have not needed to top up my SFR sim as yet ...and we have been out 8 days on the internet everyday

Got a result from FON down here in France for the 1st time ever.  Great signal, on the drop down pick fontera, not SFR, input your BT email add, then pswrd, 'felicitations', connect in 7 'secondes'....and it all worked!!    Might stay with BT afterall.
