Got a couple of jobs to do today on the van and one is cleaning the pipes and tanks, when you do yours, do you do the hot water boiler as well or not?

Never on all the vans owned have I cleaned the pipes. Always empty the tanks after a long trip and wipe the cold water tank out with a clean towel before filling it up.
We don't drink the water out of the tank.

You should do John, doesn't matter if you drink the water or not, legionnaires disease can be caught just as easy if not easier in a shower than it can drinking water, as you inhale the moist air and it gets into your lungs. i always do the tanks and pipes but up to now never done the water heater properly, I have run the cleaner through but never left it in for any period of time

uote="KSH"]Got a couple of jobs to do today on the van and one is cleaning the pipes and tanks, when you do yours, do you do the hot water boiler as well or not?[/quote]

youve gotta be very careful about what you put into the boiler some use "white wine vinegar",others use"hypochlorite" (Zappy tabs),I think either is fine the vinegar is for cleaning out or descaling only also the vinegar is good for the shower head just soak in a bowl.
A good guide as follows...

Switch off pump
Drain boiler by opening tap
Drain fresh water tank as above
Add white wine vinegar solution with water & fill fresh tank
Switch pump on to fill boiler
Redrain fresh water tank
Refill and flush through.

Polly read the instruction carefully and follow them as leaving the tablets in too long will cause a problem, 2 tablets in fresh water tank for two hours ONLY MAX, then run all the water through all the taps including HOT water taps so as the water runs through the heater, put 1 tablet in the sinks when running the taps so all the pipework gets a good cleaning, then leave ALL the water in the grey water tank for 1hr then drain, refill and drain fresh water as many times as you want until the water tastes/smells fresh again.

Bob when the water runs through the heater I don't have the hot water stitch on so it comes out as hot water do I
Just the taps in the hot water position as my taps are mixer taps

Thats right Polly you do not need to heat the water, just run it through the heater to clean it.
So run some on the cold tap then switch to hot water and run that for a few minutes, while you're running the water fill both you bowls (kitchen and bathroom) and dissolve a tablet in each then pull the plug and it will clean the outlet pipes into the grey water tank.

All done
Sat for ages (good job I had a coffee) waiting for the light to come on to tell me the waste was full. Went out to investigate and found the water leaking from the hose connection to the tank
Oh well that's life going for a shower now
