Converting fluorescent lights to LED

Post by KSH on Mon 6 Oct 2014 - 19:02

I have started changing all my lights to LED after seeing what happened to Tony's light at Bournemouth Shocked

I purchased a 5m length of 5050 LEDs which can be cut at every 3 LED's (Ebay Link)

When you get the light off, first remove this panel

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Then you will need to take the circuit board out and the terminals as these won't be needed

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

On mine, the switch is soldered to the circuit board and this holds both of them in place so you have to melt the solder in the 2 areas shown to release the switch which you will need later

Cut your LED strips to length, solder some tails on them and cover with heat shrink tape then stick them into your light fitting, I also use some clear silicone as well, the self adhesive backing isn't that good and tends to peel off

Feed the wires through to the back

Solder 2 tails onto the switch

And put the switch into the light fitting

Connect wires, adding an extra negative wire for connection to the van circuit, use one of the live wires on the switch and leave the other for connecting to the van circuit

Re- connect the back panel and feed the +ve and -ve wires through the cut out

re-fit the light

Last photo doesn't really show how bright it is, but it is a bright white light, a lot different from the dull yellow fluorescent lighting that was in before

Even I could follow it
Picture to picture

affraid affraid
But don't worry I will leave it for my electrcian.

In my van I have 2 seperate round lights on the ceiling. I don't use these but could this sort of lighting go in to these round lights

I'm just in the process of converting my fluorescents to led's....got the same led strips from ebay....I found it a bit tricky soldering wires to the small copper terminals adjacent the cut line on the led strips.

I find it easier to solder them seperately then just fuse them together

Haven't tried bending them in a circle Polly, not suitable for sticking on the inside edge of a round light and getting the light to shine outward as the sticky bit is on the back, you would end up with the LED's pointing inwards
