| Hi, Just reading a artical on the BBC web site that Basildon Hospital is about to be fined by the HSE yet again for a serious problem,
My question is what good is it to fine a Government institution, surely its just like a money merry go round and the only ones that lose are us, as normally the failures are dealt on the people in the particular area, and then a second wammy is dealt, money is taken away from services to those same people, who generally had nothing to do with the problem in the first place.
Great ? |

| Why not just sack the incompetent people we have managing our hostpitals , didn't seem to have too many problems before we got all these managers | |

| My Brother's partner used to work for the new Norfolk & Norwich Hospital in Norwich as a Nurse Manager in Oral Oncology. When the hospital was opened it was partially funded by the private sector and the government. It was agreed, contractually to do X number of operations during the year, because they exceeded that number, they were fined something like £1.7 million. To most people that sounds ridiculous, me included.
What I have worked out is, there is a central pot of money from which hospitals and GPs get funded. If there is a fine to pay like the above, that money gets removed from the contractual funding agreement for the following year. I don't think they have to pay out the money there and then, but I could be wrong.
I agree with Brian, the only loosers are the end users, i.e. us. Not sure what we can do about it though. I personally believe there are too many layers of management in the NHS and its about time it was reduced, but unfortunately its always the front line services that cut.

I agree with the above but would add inefficient layers of management.

| I really think there won't be any change until some form of competition is brought in, as at the moment no one seems to take ownership of the problems, and as for the money, I don't really think they think about it, as its just like an empty pot that you just put your hand in and take out how ever much you want to pay the fine or award ?no one seems to have to pay it out of there own pocket ? so they don't seem to care.
The above goes for all Government type bodies , BBC, Government departments, NHS etc etc.
