| I tried to grow Kiwi fruit some years ago from seed. i just ended up with a hairy vine like plant with large hairy leaves that would grow up an adjacent tree , but never had any flowers or fruit. The plant was attractive enough to keep though and it remains to this day despite the harsh winters and severe pruning back every year | |

Well you was on the right track.....and yes it is a vine.. a very heavy vine....But you need two vines a male and a female next to each other or very close to each other.....plus it could up to 5 years before you get the first flowers and fruits...and even then you may only get a couple of fruits....then after that it just gets better and better...with out doing a lot work ( a small amount of pruning)..but what you do need is a heavy timber built tee framing about 6 foot high....so you was on the right track if you knew what sex the plant was and purchased a mate and waited a few years....if it was from the seed of a fruit it may well be a female plant... ( PollinationThe burden of pollination rests mostly with honeybees, though wind and other beneficial insectsalso play a role. With few exceptions, a separate, nonfruiting male plant is needed to fertilize (and induce fruiting) of female plants. The male should be no further than 35 feet from females. Do not be surprised if it appears that female flowers have stamens, the male flower parts. The stamens are there, but the pollen they shed is sterile. Similarly, male flowers have small, nonfunctional ovaries. One male plant can fertilize the flowers of 8 or so females, and male and female plants need not be the same species of Actinidia in order to cross-pollinate. Bloom times of male and female flowers must coincide, )though.Hand pollination is practical if you grow only a few plants. Merely pluck off a male blossom and lightly rub it on a half-dozen female flowers. Then go pluck another male, repeat the rubbing, and so forth. | |
