PostWinter Trip to Spain 2016

We here are a few words and pictures of our winter trip to the Marjal site in Catral Spain, it is a big site but has everything you need on site, good bike riding area and only 1 mile from town centre and loads of camino roads with no traffic, but you do need transport if you want to get out and about and the public transport is sketchy and infrequent.

We stopped on our 1st night at Camping Olympia near Salamanca our favorite stopover heading south from Santander, two night stay with great food in the restaurant and a nice site seconds off the free motorway.

2nd Stop was Camping Arco Iris near Madrid, nice pitch with our own private shower, toilet and wash basin on the pitch, but it was a long climb up a big hill from the bar and restaurant from the pitch so we stayed put until morning, the view across to Madrid was stunning from our pitch. Bus stop outside the site to Madrid for anyone wanting to visit the city.

Then the Marjal for 4 weeks which we really enjoyed, we had great weather with only the wind they get that lasted 4 days and drives everyone round the bend, my Kampa Air Awning withstood the wind and actually was brilliant for the four weeks so very pleased with it.

On our return to Bilbao our 1st stop was Camping Riaza 40 miles north of Madrid, beautiful location with stunning mountain views, tired looking after the long winter season but they were trying their best to get the site sorted out, lovely clean warm shower/toilet block with loads of hot water, site will be great when cleaned up and is a walkers/ramblers dream site.

Last stop before the ferry was camping Haro (in Haro) again tired looking after a very cold winter with loads of snow and again the staff working hard to get it back to normal, again great facilities with good hot water and great showers. A lovely town with some great Tapas bars, loads of fine Spanish Buildings and of course the many Bodegas in the Rioja region of Northern Spain, and of course we took advantage of purchasing some of the fine vino's.

Back for the return ferry crossing.

A total of 2987 road miles with an average of 22 m.p.g (131 gals. Purchased) which for a 4500kg outfit (probably more coming home from Haro Wink ) was a nice surprise, we paid no toll fees as all was on toll free autoroutes. All great trip and looking forward to returning later this year and next year.

Hi Bob, just bought a Kampa Rally Air Pro 260...is yours a 390 ?
You say in the blog that it withstood the Spanish wind at Marjal..what about the awning wall to the caravan wall joint ?  I've not erected ours yet, but wonder about that joint..seems to me that it might flap against the van in windy conditions.
Will be trying ours out at Lytham (C&CC rally) this w/e...a few windy and wet days are forecast, but I'm sure we'll have a bit of sun at some point.

Hope to see you both over the summer.

Hi Eileen n Allen, yes ours is a pro 390 and it did stand up well in the wind on the Marjal site, we had some really strong and long periods of wind, the supporting roof tubes did bend slightly with the constant westerly we had for 4 days so did the front side corner upright.

They withstood the wind well, as for the poles the stand at the rear corners that had a thick pad that uses Velcro to attach to the side panels and the steel uprights are then protected, they did blow inward from the poles on a couple of occasions but the poles never touched the sides of the van, and you just push them back in when the wind allows. I did have 2 storm straps at each end. one holding from the side and one from the front.

In 4 weeks I only had to reflate one main support and did add some extra air to some of the other supports just to give added support but all in all it worked very well, they are not really suppose to be erected for long periods so I was happy it lasted 4 weeks without any major problem.
