I've just read on Facebook that from October we no longer have to display a tax disc. Does anyone know if this is a wind-up or is it indeed going to happen?

Not only that Debbie but the way I read the document DVLA are going to collect the vehicle tax by direct debit from our bank accounts.  That means the government will have all our bank details. Vehicle owner can check online if the vehicle is taxed or sorned.

So what about the drivers who cannot have a bank account.

There are also a large number of drivers who do not have a computer or know how to use one.  I can think of three close family relatives who do not know how to turn a computer on  Rolling Eyes

I think the powers that be are out of touch with reality.

I think its only by direct debit if you want to pay by the new monthly option, 6 or 12 month I'm sure you can pay in the usual ways

Better than the system we have now !
Not as good as the French system though ..

 study
Did you know that (according to Safeguard) you don't need to tax your vehicle if you are out of the country for any length of time ... still have to sorn it, so that it takes effect when you're away and tax it before you come back into the country.
If this is true, the new system makes it more workable because the offence of having no tax disc will be removed.
We will wait and see !  confused

I believe that the main reason you wont require a tax disc in the window is because all your vehicle information is on computer so the police radar system can pull up your details in seconds  Shocked

The tax disc to show motorists have paid vehicle excise duty is to be
replaced with an electronic system, Chancellor George Osborne has
announced in his Autumn Statement.

The disc was introduced in 1921 but officials say it is no longer needed with the DVLA and police now relying on an electronic register.
The new system will allow people to pay the charge by monthly direct debit.
The Treasury said it showed government was moving "into the modern age".
It would also make "dealing with government more hassle free", a spokesman added.

At present, motorists are able to choose whether they pay VED in twelve or six month instalments.

The latter option costs 10% extra each year, but this is expected to be cut to 5%.
The new option of paying by monthly direct debit is also expected to cost 5% more than paying for a full year in one go.

The changes are expected to come into effect in October 2014.
